This is the standard for all hard drives, regardless of manufacturer. Your computer measures the filesize as 1024bytes/kb and so on, so the actual capacity of the drive is in fact 465GB, and not 500GB. One side note to consider, the 500GB drive is measured by the manufacturer as 1000bytes/kb, 1000kb/mb, and 1000mb/gb.
This is my second Maxtor Personal Storage drive, and both are working perfectly. I was looking for a 500GB drive from a brand with a good reputation, and Maxtor stood out. My personal reason for buying this drive was for storage and access of video files, both HD and non-HD. To unplug the drive, all you must do is disable it in this menu, and there is no risk of data loss. Overall Review: In respect to the comment about not being able to safely dismount the drive, Windows XP offers the 'Safely Remove Hardware' icon in the taskbar when you plug in the hard drive. The hard drive still spins, I think the connection is faulty as it has being sensitive for the past year or so (not surprising considering all the trips on buses and planes its being on and I always packed it with the cable still plugged in). While it is a bit more pricy than other drives of the same capacity, it is worth the extra few dollars to get a reliable drive from a good manufacturer. Pros: The drive is quiet, transfer rates are equal to or higher than other USB 2.0 drives, and the drive is reliable.
